Running For Cover - a whitetail deer running across grassy rolling hills - Aug 2011

The rough sketch.

Painting in the base coat.

Painting the grass layer. Added a road.

Details of the grass. I'm putting the paint on rather thick (for me) to give it a grassy texture in addition to color.

Filling in the foreground with grass. Added the barn. Made the road more curved. It was a bit too straight for the hill.

More grass work in the foreground. Added a little bit of broken fence along the road at the top of the hill.

Blocking in the deer. He's a bit contrasty right now. I'll tone him down a bit to fit the scene better.

I decided the barn and road just weren't working the way they were. The scale was off, so I made the barn and road a bit larger. I also didn't like the way the barn was "looking" out of the picture in the opposite direction of the deer. I think it works better flipped around, "looking" toward the deer. It's not done. It still needs to be toned down, made old and faded like the other barn was. More to come...
